The existence of Art can be said as old as humanity itself. The historical backdrop of art is the history of any movement or item made by people in a visual shape for aesthetical or educational purposes, communicating thoughts, feelings or, by the whole, a perspective. The biggest development in the history of humanity was neither the stone tools nor the steel sword, but the innovation of symbolic expression by the first artists. Around 36,000 years prior, somebody living in a period unimaginably not quite the same as our own strolled into a cave and started to draw on its bare walls as it was the canvas, pictures of cave lions, crowds of rhinos, mammoths and beautiful pictures of bison. The paintings were hidden by a rock slide covering the cave opening for 22,000 years and were recently discovered in December 1994. Eliette Brunel, Christian Hillaire, and Jean-Marie Chauvet were the three spelunkers who entered the cave through a narrow crevice in a cliff and discovered which now is known as the Cave of Chauvet-Pont-d’Arc in France.
Art and the ability to consider abstract ideas is the thing that separates our species from other creatures, abilities that likewise drove us to utilize fire, invent the wheel and come up with other technologies that have made our kind so prosperous. The emergence of Art is presumably one of the key moments when our species became truly human. Over a period visual art has been characterised in various forms, from the medieval distinction between liberal arts and mechanical expressions to the sharp distinction between fine arts and applied arts, or to the numerous contemporary definitions, which characterise art as a sign of human creativity.
